Yoga

Currently our yoga class meets on Tuesday mornings from 8:45-9:45 am. The class is taught by Genevieve. Genevieve's teaching stems from a classical Yoga background and is most strongly influenced by B.K.S Iyengar. In her classes, she uses props, such as belts, blocks and straps as aids to help you into asanas (poses) one step at a time. Through the developement of the asanas, you will focus on the structural alignment of the physical body. She pays careful attention to alignment so that each student can receive the maximum benefit from each pose in a safe manner. Her classes focus on the development of strength, stamina, flexibility and balance, as well as concentration. In her classes, there is an emphasis on standing poses as they strengthen the legs and improve balance, general vitality and improve circulation. They also create a strong base for all other poses.

It was at "Healing in Yoga" in 2005, that she earned her 200 hour RYT certification from the Yoga Alliance. She continues to study with Lillah Schwartz, a certified Iyengar teacher, at Lighten Up Yoga in Asheville. There, she is learning additional methods and techniques to help people take their practice deeper and work safely with injuries and modifications. "Alignment-based yoga appeals to me because it focuses on the details of alignment and how you can modify the poses for each body to receive the maximum benefit." she says. "Working slowly and precisely like this brings you deeply into each pose." Genevieve is extremely grateful to be studying and teaching yoga and for the warmth the yoga community has shown her since moving here in 2006.
